Adapting Diabetes Medication for Low Carbohydrate Management of Type 2 Diabetes

Adapting Diabetes Medication for Low Carbohydrate Management of Type 2 Diabetes

In response to over 400,000 patients enrolling on the Low Carb Program, DDM published the UK's first demedication protocol for low carbohydrate diets (LCD) delivered through the Low Carb Program.

The paper introduces the pathological changes associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and how they can be reversed through lifestyle measures, in some cases leading to remission. The low carbohydrate diet, which was scaled through the Low Carb Program is recognised as an effective option that is clinically inexpensive with few side effects.

Many patients are achieving significant improvements in glycaemic control, with associated reduction in drug costs from cessation of hypoglycaemic agents. Digital-technology behaviour change solutions for T2D remission are being delivered at scale and primary care clinicians need to be competent to adjust diabetes medications appropriately in individuals who follow an LCD.

This was supported with an e-module on the Low Carb Diet and Type 2 Diabetes on the RCGP e-learning hub for GPs.
